James Gunn Hopes to Convince Disney to Release a 4K UHD Blu-Ray of Guardians Vol. 2

We know there’s a Dolby Cinema version of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on the way, but what about a home video version in HDR? If James Gunn gets his way, Disney will release it on home video later this year when Guardians comes home.

He said in a red carpet interview that he’s trying to convince Disney do release the 4K HDR version in homes. He also revealed that some parts of the movie are in 2K while others are in 4K, which was interesting to hear. A HDR pass has already been done on the movie for the Dolby Cinema release, so Guardians is yet another Disney movie ready to go on the format. They’ve previously done Dolby Cinema HDR versions of Rogue One and Beauty & The Beast and both of the recent Star Wars movies have 4K Digital Intermediates so they’re primed for the format.

It’s been rumored that Disney has been waiting for more Dolby Vision compatible devices to arrive on the market before jumping into 4K UHD Blu-Ray. By this fall, when Guardians is expected to be out, there should be enough TVs and players out there to justify them supporting it.
