Yesterday Marvel announced that The Inhumans will be a television series on ABC next fall instead of the movie they previously revealed as part of Phase 3. When looked at in relation to what’s been happening with X-Men, this event has opened up a very interesting theory about the future of Marvel’s mutants and what’s going on at Fox.
Marvel readers have known for a while that they’ve been trying to position the Inhumans as Marvel’s X-Men replacement. The characters are similar to mutants, and they kind of fit that role in the MCU so far. In the comics there’s been a very heavy focus on the Inhumans to the point where the mutants are on the verge of extinction due to the Terrigen Mist causing a plague among them. This will come to a resolution in the big X-Men vs Inhumans event at the end of the year, but there are bigger things on the horizon.
First off Marvel is doing a big X-Men resurrection event in the spring. This will restore the mutants to their formal glory in the comics, as the characters will no longer be under the threat of extinction following the events of the big Inhumans crossover.
Even bigger than that, Marvel is once again allowing X-Men merchandise to be produced. Funko will be producing 90s X-Men Pop Vinyls and they will celebrate this via their monthly subscription box in December with an X-Men theme. This is a huge deal as while Fox was production X-Men movies, there really wasn’t any major merchandise being produced as Disney didn’t see the point in benefiting a movie series they weren’t involved with.
Then there’s the news that Fox is looking to reboot the X-Men movie franchise, and the recent revelation that Fox traded Ego the Living Planet to Marvel Studios in exchange for Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s powers in Deadpool.
So you have:
- Inhumans on TV, not a movie.
- Marvel restoring the X-Men comic line to greatness.
- Marvel allowing X-Men merchandise to be produced.
- Fox wanting to reboot the X-Men films.
- Marvel and Fox working out deals to trade characters.
All of those signs point to something really big on the horizon for the X-Men. Even with the chilly history between Marvel and Fox, there is a lot of smoke pointing to a fire. If you’re a fan of the X-Men, it’s really starting to feel like Marvel and Fox could be on the verge of a Sony-style deal that will bring the mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the movement Marvel has been making with the mutants on their side already, it’s possible such an agreement is already in place and they’re just waiting on a big time to announce it…
