The Barista meets the Doctor

You wake up and believe it’s going to be an ordinary day, like all the others, but then something happens that makes it extraordinary.

Everyone who knows me knows I’m a huge Doctor Who fan. Posters on the walls, all seasons on DVD, my license plate says my other car’s a TARDIS, so huge fan. They also know that I’ve been working in a café for seven years of my life. Did I ever think these two important things in my life would combine? Not until this weekend…

It was 11:15 AM and the day was already busy. People wanted their Venti Skinny Peppermint Mochas with an extra shot and they wanted it quick. It always seemed to be the busiest when the other co-worker was on break. Just when I got reinforcements I noticed a familiar face standing in line. I noticed the man when he walked into the building and thought from afar he could possibly be the 5th Doctor, Peter Davison, from Doctor Who. Now that he was closer up the resemblance was uncanny, but people often looked like other people, so what were the chances of the 5th Doctor being in my café on Long Island? When he spoke to my co-worker at the register I heard a British accent and I was more convinced it was him. If he gave Peter as a name for his order I would have been sold! But his English Breakfast tea went unnamed. I knew I wanted to ask if he was in fact who I thought he was, but I had missed my chance.

Then he came back for milk for his tea…Sure there was the condiment bar, but I could stop the three other drinks I was working on to help. My hand shook uncontrollably as I poured the 2% milk from the gallon into the cup. This was my time to ask. If I didn’t I would be kicking myself later.

I handed back the cup.

“You look familiar. Are you an actor?” I asked.
“Yes,” he replied.
“Were you in Doctor Who?”
“Yes.”
“Are you the 5th Doctor?”
“Yes.”

OMG! OMG! OMG! What was happening? I remember saying how much I loved Doctor Who, but otherwise I blacked out. I asked if he was in town for the Long Island Doctor Who convention, which he was and I said it was nice meeting him.

Ironically my fifteen minute break was coming up and I began hemming and hawing whether I should bother asking him for an autograph. Then I thought when would this opportunity ever arise again?? He signed a paper tray liner from café personally to me and suggested I could have a photo if I had a camera phone. Mine was upstairs. He said they were leaving at 12.

It was 11:58.

I quickly caught the elevator, which had a woman inside who I may or may not have scared and came back down in the nick of time.
Now I have an autograph and photo to prove this did actually happen. He was such a nice guy and I am extremely appreciative that he spoke with me. This just proves the Doctor can be anywhere in space and time. You just have to keep your eyes open!
