Unlike the Ultimate Edition of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and the Ultimate Cut of Watchmen, the Extended Edition of Suicide Squad will not be available in 4K UHD.
Warner Brothers issued the official press release for Suicide Squad and detailed this for the 4K UHD Blu-Ray version where the 4K disc will only include the theatrical cut:
“The Ultra HD Blu-ray features an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc with the theatrical version in 4K with HDR and a Blu-ray disc with the extended version.”
This is a big disappointment and almost the exact opposite of what Warner did with the BvS Ultimate 4K set. On that version, the 4K UHD disc included the Ultimate Cut in HDR while the Blu-Ray had the theatrical version. This time you’ll only get the Extended Edition in 1080p.
Unlike Batman V Superman, which had its 4K release struck from the films’s 4K Digital Intermediate, Suicide Squad looks like it had a 2K Digital Intermediate. That means the 4K Theatrical version on the UHD disc is another up-conversion and those traditionally don’t look as impressive as true 4K transfers such as Batman V Superman, Deadpool, and The Revenant. Still, it’s pretty disappointing that we’ll only get the extended version in 1080p.
