Star Wars Episode VIII has wrapped principal photography, but one character still has scenes to “film” for the movie.
Speaking to Collider at TIFF, Lupita Nyong’o says she hasn’t done her Maz Kanata scenes yet:
“What was it like working with Rian [Johnson]?
NYONG’O: Rian! I haven’t worked with him yet; I’ve yet to shoot. That’s in my future.”
Maz Kanata was one of the first images from the movie that Rian Johnson released, so it’s confirmed that she’s in it. There have been rumors of some difficulty or issues with the on-set motion capture that was used during production of The Force Awakens, and they did have an eye-level stand in for Maz during that movie. Taking those rumors in context it’d make a lot of sense if they used the stand-in during filming of Episode VIII to then have Lupita fill in the main performance for the CG character later.
