New Info on Darth Vader\’s Role in Rogue One

prowse-vader-pointingYesterday confirmation came that Darth Vader would appear in Rogue One, and today there’s more information about his role.

This again comes from the new EW issue about the movie, and they confirmed that James Earl Jones will be returning to voice Vader. He’s been the voice of Vader in Star Wars Rebels, so it’d be very strange for him to not do the voice in Rogue One. And despite rumors of the reshoots existing to add a whole lot of Vader to the movie, it sounds like he’ll have a limited role with one big crowd-pleasing moment:

Kennedy says Rogue One has to make careful use of Vader. “He will be in the movie sparingly,” she says. “But at a key, strategic moment, he’s going to loom large.”

They also explain how Vader fits into this time period right before A New Hope:

“Within the Rebellion, it’s not commonly spoken about,” says director Gareth Edwards. “Within the Empire, there is the culture of knowing of the existence of Darth Vader. There’s definitely an underlying feeling that there is a power – a dark power – available to the Empire and that if you overstep your mark, you will suffer the consequences.”

The piece also confirms something cool. Back during the production of The Force Awakens in 2014 there were rumors coming out of Pinewood of Vader suits. I don’t know if these rumors were ever printed anywhere, but people were sure that there was a Darth Vader suit on the set of Episode VII. It turns out that was being used as a test for Rogue One:

While prepping to start Rogue One, Edwards’ first experience with the fallen Jedi came in the Fall of 2014 during a test shoot on the Starkiller Base set of The Force Awakens. They were experimenting with how best to light all that gleaming black armor in amongst the shimmering backdrop of Imperial-style architecture.

It’ll be interesting to see if they show Vader in the marketing at all. The next trailer is just a couple weeks away at Star Wars Celebration London…
