Rumor: Is the Writer of \’After Earth\’ About to Ruin \’The Last Starfighter\’?

A classic 80s movie may be headed for a completely un-needed remake, as The Last Starfighter may be remade from a script by the Razzie-winning writer of After Earth.

Gary Whitta, who most recently did the first draft of Rogue One before being replaced by talented writers, Tweeted this image from The Last Starfighter with the caption “Writing”:

This has led many to believe that he was teasing a remake to the movie.

There could still be hope this is all a false alarm, as Seth Rogan said back in 2014 that even Steven Spielberg couldn’t get the rights to remake the movie:

@slashfilm @garywhitta @mbotti @mscriptshadow Spielberg himself told me he couldn't get the rights after I told him how long I'd tried.

According to a Gizmodo article at that time, it’s because the writer of the original movie owns its rights and won’t give them up. Unless something changed, we will hopefully not see a remake of this classic.
