Most Star Trek fans know how CBS and Paramount have been waging war against fans by filing a lawsuit against the fan film “Axanar” and threatening other fan films with the same. It’s for that reason we’ve been reluctant to cover anything related to Star Trek lately, as if Paramount is going to be so petty to sue fan films what’s to stop them from going after any fan who says something about Star Trek they don’t like?

Last night Paramount premiered the underwhelming Star Trek Beyond trailer (which looks like Nemesis in the Abramsverse) and JJ Abrams was at the event. TrekNews.net has a quote from him where he claims Paramount is dropping the lawsuit against Axanar:

“A few months back there was a fan movie — Axanar — that was being made and there was a lawsuit that happened between the studio (Paramount and CBS) and the fans and Justin was sort of outraged as a longtime fan. We started talking about it and we realized that this was not an appropriate way to deal with the fans. The fans should be iceboating this thing, like you’re saying right now.” Abrams said when asked about the Axanar lawsuit.

“We all — fans of Star Trek — are part of this world. So we went to the studio and pushed them to stop this lawsuit and now, within the next few weeks, it will be announced that this is going away,”

Hopefully JJ Abrams is right and they really are going to drop the lawsuit. Otherwise once more people see Star Trek Beyond it’ll become pretty obvious why they were scared of a little fan film being better than their big budget summer movie that is using the “Star Trek” name to sell itself.
