VR Comes Home With the $599 Oculus Rift

Oculus-RiftAfter a long wait, the first real consumer VR headset is now available for pre-order with the Oculus Rift.

The Facebook-owned VR company has put up the headset for pre-order at $599. For that price you get the headset, sensor, Xbox One controller, and two games: Eve Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale.

It wasn’t long ago that Oculus told ArsTechnica that they may sell the headset at cost:

“I’m hopeful we’re not going to be losing money on [the hardware], but I think everybody agrees that if we can do it at cost that would be great for everybody,” Iribe continued. “As Mark says, as you start to get to race to scale there are a lot of opportunities to monetize that are really great for consumers, because they get a really low-cost product.”

$599 is even more expensive than the development kit versions of the headset cost, so they’re definitely not selling this thing at cost.

The next VR headset to release will be Sony’s PlayStation VR. That’s one to keep an eye on as well as the headset’s dual OLED screens will likely keep its cost up as well.
