MAJOR SPOILERS: Why Luke is NOT Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens

The Force Awakens Teaser 2Ever since the final trailer was released for The Force Awakens, an incredibly stupid theory has been polluting the internet that says Luke is really Kylo Ren. This is based on Luke not being seen in the final trailer or even the poster of the movie, so people decided to invent a theory that he turned evil and became Kylo Ren.

Those who have followed the spoilers of the movie over the last eight months know that to not be true at all, and it’s actually become pretty frustrating trying to explain to people why they’re completely wrong without spoiling them on social media. So I decided to write this up once and for all, just to have something in one spot to direct those who don’t mind being spoiled.

I am prefacing the below with a MAJOR SPOILER warning. If you do not want to know what is REALLY up with Luke Skywalker in The Force Awakens and want to continue to believe the dumb Evil Luke/Kylo Ren crap people are spreading, DO NOT read the spoiler below.

Likewise if you DO NOT want to have the ending of The Force Awakens SPOILED for you, do not read the text below this warning.

Luke Skywalker is really not seen much at all in The Force Awakens. That’s not to say his presence isn’t felt, but you really don’t see him outside of two scenes.

The driving force in the movie, its McGuffin, is the Skywalker lightsaber he lost on Bespin in The Empire Strikes Back. It’s the item Poe Dameron is sent to retrieve at the beginning of the movie, and it’s the “weapon” that Kylo Ren wants so bad (as the talking toy describes). The Resistance, led by Leia, believes the saber (and other information) could lead them to her long-lost brother who has been in hiding for some time. The First Order, led by Kylo Ren and Snoke, believes the saber could lead them to the last Jedi to destroy him (again described in the toy dialog).

Through the course of the film, the saber makes its way into the hands of the former Stormtrooper Finn and the Scavenger Rey who are then swept up on an adventure. The movie is their story, and the legacy of Luke Skywalker and that lightsaber is the driving force that sets them off to become the focus of the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy.
The Force Awakens Teaser 2
Luke is seen twice in the movie. The first time was actually shown in the last two trailers and it a scene during a flashback where Maz Kanata explains to Finn and Rey what happened to Luke following the events of the Original Trilogy. Something very bad happens at his Jedi Academy and the shot in the trailer is him reacting to that.

The next time you see Luke isn’t until the final scene of the movie. The Droids (Artoo, Threepio, and BB-8) decode something using the saber and are able to find out where Luke is in hiding. Rey takes the Skywalker lightsaber and flies there with the Falcon and Chewie. When she finds Luke he isn’t evil, he isn’t Kylo Ren, he’s just Luke Skywalker.

There’s sure to be endless debate among fans about how Luke is used in the movie that’s the sequel to Return of the Jedi, but that’s an internet war for another time. For now, people (some big name sites as well) are spreading around a completely false idea of who and what Luke Skywalker is in The Force Awakens. There are only about fifty days until the movie is released, but that doesn’t seem to phase the people taking a stance on “Evil Luke” for some quick website hits.

Luke isn’t evil in The Force Awakens, and those who are trying to convince you that he is are going to look pretty bad in December…
