Fantastic Four Tracking for a #1 Opening

People are stupid. A movie with a dismal Rotten Tomatoes rating and even worse reviews is going to be the #1 movie in America this weekend.

According to tracking, Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four flop will make around $45 million this weekend. By default it will then be the #1 movie and I’m sure Fox is already preparing the TV spots trumpeting that fact…while failing to mention that virtually no one gave it a good review. At the current 9% it’s a worse movie than Elektra (10% on RT)…it’s that bad.

However we could get lucky. Variety is predicting it won’t even make $30 million, in which case it wouldn’t be #1 and more likely #2 or even #3.

We can only hope that word of mouth spreads and Fantastic Four takes a huge dive next weekend. With a $120 million budget it’ll take a miracle for it to be a big enough international hit for Fox to keep up with the franchise instead of giving the rights back to Marvel. Next week Fantastic Four faces steep competition with Straight Outta Compton and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. opening, which will likely each take the #1 and #2 spots away from Fox’s mega-bomb.
