A Familiar Effect Returns in The Force Awakens



A special effect sequence that’s very familiar to Star Wars fans will make a return in this December’s The Force Awakens.

For a while now there’s been a rumor that the holochess table in the Falcon will be used at some point in the movie. While JJ Abrams has said in the past that they tried to not purposely reference the original movies too much, you can’t really blame him for wanting to use the famous chess table from the original Star Wars.

Even though there will be an “enormous amount of CG” in The Force Awakens, it sounds like they’re doing the chess table the same way they did in A New Hope. Mythbuster’s Adam Savage gave a video interview (below) where he says Phil Tippet did the characters using stop motion animation just like they did back in 1976:
