201 Days of The X-Files: Deep Throat

201-days-of-x-files-deep-throatFox’s The X-Files is returning to television in January, and the network has given fans a challenge to watch all 201 episodes of the series counting down to the release. We’ve taken the challenge and will post one of these articles every day leading up to the release of the new season. All nine seasons of The X-Files are available on DVD and are currently streaming on Netflix. Both movies will be included in this countdown, and will be viewed following the season five finale and the season finale.

Following the Pilot, the first true episode of The X-Files is a major kick off for the show’s mythology. While the pilot didn’t have it, this episode is the first to give us the show’s famous theme song and opening credits.

Early in the episode Mulder is introduced to Deep Throat played by Jerry Hardin. This is the first of Mulder’s informants who will carefully advise him throughout the run of the series, and Deep Throat tells him to avoid this case of pilots who go missing from an air base. Of course being the seeker of Truth, Mulder ignores the warnings and he and Scully begin to look into the case.

Even though it’s early in the series, Deep Throat features some classic X-Files moments. Of course everyone remembers Mulder being hit with a spotlight from the triangle craft, and that comes from this episode. Fox would use that in X-Files marketing for the entire run of the series. There’s also a memorable guest spot by Seth Green as a UFO buff who helps Mulder find that triangle craft.

Deep Throat is another essential episode for X-Files fans as this is the real kickoff to the long-running “mythology”. We meet Deep Throat for the first time here, and he’ll be a major character that helps Mulder begin to chisel away at the conspiracy. The conversation between Mulder and him at the end of the episode lays some strings for what will be coming in the next five seasons and movie, and it all begins right here in the second episode of the first season.

Up next is the first ever monster of the week episode!
