Disney Cancels Tron 3

Disney Cancels Tron 3

Bad news for those waiting on Tron 3, Disney has just cancelled the sequel.

The Wrap broke the bad news tonight citing the bombing of Tomorrowland as one reason it’s dead:

The cancellation of “Tron 3” comes on the heels of “Tomorrowland” underperforming at the box office last weekend. Brad Bird‘s original film cost Disney $180 million and grossed a disappointing $42.7 million over the four-day holiday weekend.

“Tron 3” had not been officially greenlit yet and after the relative failure of “Tomorrowland,” Disney executives may not have wanted to gamble and risk exposing the studio to another loss.

Tron 3, which apparently would’ve been titled Tron: Ascension, was originally scheduled to shoot this fall in Canada.

Aside from the Tomorrowland reason, Tron was a home-grown “boys” franchise Disney had prior to purchasing Marvel and Star Wars. Now that they have those money-printers, they really don’t want to waste time or money on a sequel to a movie that didn’t light the box office on fire like Marvel or Star Wars do.
