Harry Shearer May Leave The Simpsons

Harry Shearer Leave The SimpsonsThis morning, the Internet is in panic mode after one of the key cast members of The Simpsons revealed he may not be returning for the recently renewed 27th and 28th seasons of the show. Harry Shearer Tweeted that he may leave The Simpsons to pursue other projects, and people involved with the show seem to confirm that.

Unlike most of the people on the Internet who are freaking out over this (because they haven’t watched The Simpsons in more than fifteen years) I still occasionally watch the show and it does make me laugh from time to time. Losing Shearer would be a blow as this is just a small list of the characters he voices:

  • Ned Flanders
  • Charles Montgomery Burns
  • Waylon Smithers
  • Seymour Skinner
  • Dr. Hibbert
  • Lenny Leonard
  • Kent Brockman
  • Scratchy
  • Kang
  • Eddie
  • Otto Mann
  • Rev. Lovejoy
  • Rainier Wolfcastle

Here’s the Tweet that kicked off the Internet panic:

from James L. Brooks’ lawyer: “show will go on, Harry will not be part of it, wish him the best.”. (1/2)

And Al Jean seems to confirm it to be true:

@simpsonswiki @TheSimpsons recast if Harry does not return. No yellow wedding.

.@thesimpsons #everysimpsonsever The show will go on, made by people who love it and see in it the most wonderful vehicle for satire ever.

However Shearer told CNN there’s still time for him to stay:

“In last four years, I’ve created and starred in a UK TV series and starred on London stage. Not stopping,” he wrote in a message to CNNMoney.

When asked whether there’s a chance he will continue on “The Simpsons,” he said “I think that’s a question better posed to them.”

That means this could all just be a negotiating tactic on the part of Shearer, but the producers seem to be holding firm saying he was given the same offer as the rest of the cast but rejected it.

Wayne and Garth pretty much express what fans of The Simpsons are thinking in this video:
