The X-Men universe comic New Mutants is the latest spin-off of the franchise Fox is producing as a movie, and it even has a writer and director on board.
Deadline broke the news this morning that Fox has hired the director of “The Fault in Our Stars”, Josh Boone, to write and direct a big screen version of New Mutants.
The original New Mutants comic, which most people remember, ran from 1983 to 1991 at which point Rob Liefeld renamed the team “X-Force” (and he was thus credited for “creating” X-Force). Issue #98 of the comic (pictured above) famously introduced Deadpool, who at the time was a serious and unfunny ripoff of DC’s Deathstroke and not the comedic fourth-wall breaking character Fox is making a movie of right now.
Speaking of X-Force, we haven’t heard a peep out of Fox about that movie. With New Mutants announced with a writer and director attached to it, I wouldn’t be shocked if that movie happens first. Then they could bring in Deadpool and spin off some of the New Mutants characters into X-Force reflecting what happened in the comics back in the early 90s.
