Not willing to completely let Marvel have all of the Spider-Man fun, Sony has announced they’ll make their own Spidey in animation.
Announced at CinemaCon yesterday by the enemy of all comic book movies, Tom Rothman, the new Spider-Man animated movie will be done by the directors of the LEGO Movie and will open in July 2018, one year after Marvel’s solo Spider-Man movie will hit and feature the new teen-aged Spidey on the big screen.
Right now nothing more is known about the animated Spider-Man movie, but releasing it a year after the new live-action one will definitely confuse people. It’s almost like Sony doesn’t want to fully let Spidey go and is purposely muddying the water in a “stomping their feet” hissy fit over no having full control over the live-action Spider-Man anymore.
Even worse, Sony says the other movies in the Spider-Man Universe are still coming. That means the rumored Sinister Six, Venom, and even Aunt May movies could still happen despite Marvel putting Spidey into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
