Oscar Nominee Set to Replace Gary Whitta on the First Star Wars Spin-Off

Boba FettDespite rumors flying around that Simon Kinberg would be the replacement for Gary Whitta on Gareth Edward’s Star Wars movie, an Oscar nominee will be taking over instead.

This afternoon The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Chris Weitz is who will be completing the script for the movie that is quickly speeding up preparation at Pinewood studios right now:

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the latest scribe headed to a galaxy far, far away is Chris Weitz, whose credits include the 2002 film About A Boy and Disney’s upcoming Cinderella.

He will replace Gary Whitta, who exited the Lucasfilm/Disney project earlier this month after he completed a first draft.

The spin-off is rumored to feature a young Han Solo teaming up with Boba Fett and a group of bounty hunters for a heist, that just so happens to end with them accidentally stealing the plans for the first Death Star. It’s expected to begin filming this spring in the UK and will be released December 2016.
