Marvel wasn’t able to confirm it when they announced their Phase 3 line-up recently, but today it’s real. Benedict Cumberbatch will be the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when he plays Stephen Strange in 2016.
Marvel made the announcement official on their website:
“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,†said Producer Kevin Feige. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.â€
This is possibly the most perfect casting in a Marvel movie since the first Iron Man. The BBC’s Sherlock is basically Stephen Strange without the magic, so Cumberbatch will fit right in with the role.
