This summer’s Godzilla finally hits Blu-Ray this week, and to mark the occasion we’ve collected the five moments in the movie that earned a huge fanboy cheer from us in the theater. Sure, people may have looked at us a bit strange for cheering at a big CG monster. But this is Godzilla. And this is the Godzilla fans have wanted back on the big screen. Godzilla 2 should be at the top of your anticipated list.
As most of these are pulled from the eight minutes of Godzilla action in the movie, and a few are considered spoilers, we marked this list as a spoiler for those who have not yet seen the movie.
His Debut in Hawaii
This is the first in a long line of much complained about teases in the movie. Godzilla shows up at the airport in Hawaii and roars at the camera. That got a huge cheer, and then the fight was only shown briefly on a TV news report. They had their reasons to tease us like that, as the real fun will happen later in the movie…
Godzilla Being Badass in the Rain
The second big tease was just as awesome as the first. With Godzilla showing up in daylight in the rain, and beginning to fight one of the MUTOs. Again we don’t get to see the whole thing, because then the big battle at the end wouldn’t be so special. And yes, it was very special…
That First Atomic Breath
The best reveal in the entire movie is the first Atomic Breath. As soon as you see the spikes on Godzilla’s tail and back begin to glow you go “Oh boy” because you know what’s about to come out of his mouth. As this is something the 1998 GINO (Godzilla in Name Only) forgot about, seeing his Atomic Breath on the big screen in such an awesome way was one of the biggest cheers in the movie. But they were about the blow the top off the theater with the next one…
The Epic Final Atomic Breath
I don’t see how you can be a Godzilla fanboy and not have freaked out over that final use of his Atomic Breath. That was Godzilla being the ultimate monster-killing badass right there. Prying open a MUTO’s mouth and forcing them to take the Atomic Breath? Yea that’s a serious geekgasm right there.
“King of the Monsters, Savior of our City?”
Godzilla’s final triumphant roar in the movie signifies a few things. Firstly, the movie didn’t suck as much as GINO. Secondly, Godzilla is back and in a very big way. And thirdly, this Godzilla series is embracing the Godzilla that’s more of the hero. This isn’t a city smashing mindless beast, this is the Godzilla who protects the planet from monsters that will otherwise destroy it.
