Long-time PC RPG fans will remember the classic “Gold Box” RPGs by Strategic Simulations Inc.. The games, which earned their names due to the gold box they came in, were the closest reproduction of pen-and-paper RPGs on a computer and they defined the Dungeons & Dragons license in the digital realm. These were the games that were the precursors to modern classics such as Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape Torment.
Now veterans of SSI are back with a new company named Tactical Simulations Interactive and it sounds like they plan to resurrect their popular RPG system.
David Shelly had this to say about the new company and their goals:
“Tactical Simulations Interactive is a return to providing the player full control of their party, with a focus on creating immersive and unforgettable story experiences, exciting exploration, meaningful social/political choices, and robust tactical combat.â€
There are people with very fond memories of the THAC0 days, and TSI has a chance to give us the PC RPG we’ve been wanting for a very long time. They’ll be announcing their project soon and don’t be surprised if it’s a RPG with rich tactical combat…
