Following the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie exceeding box office expectations and walking away with a $65 million opening, it’s no surprise that Paramount quickly announced a sequel.
Deadline has learned that Paramount has quickly slated the second movie into a June 3, 2016 release date and Michael Bay will produce once again and the same writing team behind the original will return:
The project from Nickelodeon Movies will bow on June 3, 2016. Bay will produce alongside his Platinum Dunes partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, with Galen Walker and Scott Mednick. Screenwriters Josh Appelbaum & André Nemec (Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocal) are again coming aboard to write the sequel and will also receive an exec producing credit. It’s not clear if Jonathan Liebsman will again direct.
As the same screenwriters will return, it’s doubtful the issues TMNT fans have with the first movie will be addressed. Once again it’ll likely focus on April, and she’ll be the one to defeat Super Shredder or whoever the villain turns out to be in this one. Is it too much to ask for Baxter Stockman?
