As many Marvel Cosmic fans know, Rocket’s co-creator Bill Mantlo has been hospitalized since 1992 when he was left brain-damaged from a hit-and run accident.
Since he couldn’t make it to a theater to see Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel arranged a private screening of the movie for him in his hospital and his brother Michael detailed it on Bill’s Facebook group:
*****WHAT AN INCREDIBLE DAY FOR BILL MANTLO*****! Marvel hooked Bill up with a PRIVATE VIEWING of “Guardians Of The Galaxy”, and my wife Liz and my beloved cousin Jean assisted Bill throughout, enabling him to sit back, relax and relish in the AWESOMENESS of what is going to be, in my humble opinion, Marvel’s GREATEST AND MOST SUCCESSFUL FILM EVER! Bill thoroughly enjoyed it, giving it his HIGHEST COMPLIMENT (the BIG “THUMB’S UP!”), and when the credits rolled, his face was locked into the HUGEST SMILE I HAVE EVER SEEN HIM WEAR (along with one or two tears of joy)! This was the GREATEST DAY OF THE LAST 22 YEARS for me, our family, and most importantly, BILL MANTLO!
It’s a pretty common thing on the internet these days for bloggers to “white knight” the deprived creators of comic books, those who have been “wronged” by signing a contract with evil Marvel or DC. These comic justice warriors targeted Bill Mantlo earlier in the year with lies that Marvel was letting him rot, and his brother set it straight a few months ago on the same Facebook group:
And, again because you are not privy to private contractual terms, you are way off base with accusations that Marvel has not compensated Bill adequately.
So in addition to Marvel taking care of Mantlo financially, they also went out of their way to provide a private screening for him in his hospital so he could see his creation brought to life perfectly.
