We’re only a couple weeks away from this year’s San Diego Comic Con, and it’s set to be a major one for Marvel Studios. With Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers: Age of Ultron closing out Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this is the year when they’re likely to reveal their Phase 3 lineup. Below you’ll find the movies that will likely be announced as the Phase 3 films, and barring any surprises (Black Panther, anyone?) these are all good bets as to what will show up based on the evidence we’ve seen over the last few months.
Marvel will definitely showcase Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers: Age of Ultron at the panel (including the first footage for the latter), but this list is focused on the new “Phase 3” movies…
Marvel has already hired a director and writer for Doctor Strange, which means it’s officially on the way. Stephen Strange was name-dropped in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and the character has had some heavy focus in the current New Avengers comic storyline. That means Marvel is grooming people to be introduced to the Sorcerer Supreme on the big screen, and SDCC will likely be his big “official” debut as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Ant Man is the movie that kicks off Marvel Phase 3. Some think Avengers does, but the Avengers movie is always the end-cap for the current Phase…in this case Phase 2. Following all of the controversy surrounding Ant Man, all eyes will be on the SDCC panel to see how Marvel dances around the negativity.
Captain America 3
Captain America 3 has a release date, May 6th 2016, so all we need now is a title. As the movie is technically announced, we’ll likely get that title at SDCC and it will hopefully give us an idea of what the story will be. Will it be Masters of Evil? Will Black Panther show up in it? Maybe we’ll get some of those answers at the panel.
As with Captain America 3, we know Thor 3 is on the way. We don’t yet have a release date for the movie, which means Marvel will likely give that at the panel along with a title. Will the third Thor movie lead into Avengers 3 with Thanos going after the Infinity Gauntlet in Odin’s Vault?
Guardians of the Galaxy: Planet Hulk
Guardians of the Galaxy is central to Marvel’s plans leading up to a showdown with Thanos in the third Avengers movie. This means that there would need to be another Guardians movie prior to Avengers 3 in order to explain how they show up on Earth to fight Thanos with the Avengers. Recent rumors have popped up explaining that Hulk would be sent to space, and that would be the way the Guardians return to Earth. It makes sense and would get people to see a Guardians sequel even if for some reason the first movie doesn’t end up being a hit.
While many people are expecting a “Captain Marvel” movie featuring Carol Danvers, Marvel may not be going in that direction with the Cinematic Universe. Right now, rumors are pointing to Coulson in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. being tied in some way to the Cinematic Universe’s Captain Marvel, which means the expected Carol Danvers version wouldn’t happen right away. Yet there have been some heavy rumors that Marvel is planning a Ms. Marvel movie based on the current run of the comic, which has been very well received. If this movie is happening, there’s a chance it’ll be part of Phase 3 and announced at SDCC.
