No Smoking for Constantine

Notice something missing from the recent trailers for Constantine on NBC? Fans of the long-running Vertigo/DC comic probably noticed that his signature smoking was missing from any footage that was released. Some believed that may have just been a bit of censorship for promotional purposes, but it looks like he won’t be smoking in the series at all.

In an interview at Collider, Neil Marshall (who directed the pilot) confirms John won’t be lighting up in the TV version:

It’s the one thing, a compromise I guess. On network it’s the one thing you can’t smoke on network. That’s one of his character traits. We’re working around that. We’re trying to get aspects of it in there as much as possible. We’ll see.

He smoked in the Keanu Reeves film adaptation (which was one of the few things it had in common with the comic), but even though the series will air at 10:00pm Friday nights on NBC, cigarettes aren’t allowed…
