George R. R. Martin Addresses the Rumor of an Eighth Book

George R. R. Martin

Yesterday a rumor started to spread around the internet that said George R.R. Martin was extending the Song of Ice and Fire series to eight books. Right now, the series is meant to end with book seven “A Dream of Spring”, and Martin is still in the middle of writing the sixth book “The Winds of Winter”.

Entertainment Weekly asked Martin about this, and he confirms that he’s still planning on only seven…for now:

“My plan is to finish in seven,” Martin says. “But my original plan was to finish in three. I write the stories and they grow. I deal with certain things and sometimes I find myself not at the end of a story. My plan right now is still seven. But first I have to finish Book Six. Get back to me when I’m half-way through Book Seven and then maybe I’ll tell you something more meaningful.”

When the rumor of an eighth book came out, fans of the novels rolled their eyes. At the rate that Martin is writing now, we’ll be lucky to see book seven by 2020!
