Blizzard Loses Its Staring Contest With TOR

|

Remember back in July when EA said that they weren’t announcing The Old Republic release date as they were worried that their primary competitor would do to counter it? Their primary competitor is Blizzard, and EA was naturally worried about either a new WoW expansion or a Diablo III release to counter The Old Republic.

Well, it looks like Blizzard lost that staring contest as they’ve officially pushed Diablo III to sometime in early 2012:

We commonly use the term “soon” when referring to Blizzard releases, because we know that no matter how hard we’re working to reach a target, we’re not going to compromise and launch a game before it’s ready. For Diablo III, we were aiming to launch by the end of 2011. As we’re announcing globally today, our new target for the game is early 2012.

With Diablo III not releasing until next year, EA is safe to release The Old Republic this holiday season. What would have happened with the release date of TOR if Diablo III made it in early December? The general consensus is that the Jedis may have been pushed to 2012 instead.
