It seems like a lot of people wanted to see giant robots level Chicago this 4th of July weekend, as Transformers: Dark of the Moon set a new box office record. For its weekend opening, Michael Bay’s final Transformers spectacle raked in $97.5 million, which breaks the previous 4th of July weekend record set by Spider-Man 2 at $88.2 million.
Transformers 3 opened on a Wednesday, so its six day gross was $175.6 million. That’s higher than the first Transformers’ six day, but lower than Revenge of the Fallen.
In all, the movie has made more than $300 million with international grosses already so it’s safe to assume there will likely be a Transformers 4; even if Michael Bay doesn’t return.
