Dark Tower Delayed

Though we’ve been hearing that filming of Ron Howard’s upcoming Dark Tower adaptation is facing budget issues, word from Opie himself has made it all official. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Howard not only admits to the budget-related shooting delay but also that Javier Bardem is no longer a lock for Roland Deschain:

“We had to pull back to our September start date due to budget delays and ongoing story development and logistical issues, but Dark Tower is moving forward,” Howard said. “We’re thinking of starting in early spring now. I can’t really say who’ll be in it yet, but Javier Bardem has shown a great deal of interest. We’ll know by the end of the summer, when our flashing green light goes solid.”

I for one am thrilled at this news.  Though Bardem could make for a captivating Roland I am wary of the production team.  Howard is an accomplished director but he lacks the style and balls to take on such an emotionally and physically brutal story.  Furthermore, let us not forget that the writer, Akiva Goldsman, is responsible for some of the worst screenplays of recent years.  My guess is that this adaptation will never be officially Green Lit.  We shall see.
