There’s a nasty bug with the recently released PS3 port of Mass Effect 2 that’s causing massive hard drive corruption in PS3s and in the worst case completely bricking the system. It happens when the game crashes, and corrupts not only the save file but also the entire hard drive. Some people have escaped with just doing a simple format, while others have been left with a dead system that won’t boot. Thankfully, a fix is on the way.
BioWare has found out that the crash is caused by memory fragmentation, and suggests players reboot the game every couple hours to prevent it until the patch comes out. They’ve submitted the patch to SCEA, so it should hit soon. The patch will also fix an annoying bug where the picture frame in Shepard’s quarters is supposed to have a picture of the love interest from the first game. Well, right now in the PS3 version it always shows Kaiden no matter what you decided in the intro. The patch will fix that, thankfully.
