Game Dev Story Review

We don’t normally review many iOS games, simply because there are so many out there and there are a lot that are great (you need Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, and ChuChu Rocket on your device); but Game Dev Story is an exception. This is by far one of the most addicting games you can install on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. How addicting? Well, last night I played this little cellphone game for nearly five hours straight.

The idea of the game is simple, you’re running a small startup gaming company. You start out with just two employees and while you can start off making a game, it’s a good idea to take some contract work to build up funds. After a while you’re company can expand and you can hire new employees. You can hire Coders, Designers, Sound Engineers, Producers, Directors, the awesome Hackers, and eventually even Hardware Engineers and create your own console. The game uses fake consoles that are obviously based on real ones from Sega, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, SNK, etc. Some of the descriptions, especially the one when the Wii is announced, can be hilariously true.

It’s a sim, but a strategy game at the same time. And working to train and level up your various employees to create a hit game and make enough money to afford a development license for the newest console is amazingly addictive. It may seem simple at first, but there is a surprising amount of depth and it’s one of those games (like Civilization) where you completely lose track of time while playing it.

If you have $5 and own an iOS device and like videogames, Game Dev Story is a must have. It’s one of the best games ever made for a cellphone and one that if ever ported to a console or PC would become an instant classic. It can’t come with a higher recommendation. Buy it right now.
