Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem Review

One really popular thing with mobile phones these days is to release a cheap knockoff of a larger console game release right around the same time as the big game. Most of the time these games are just modern versions of those old Tiger handhelds; cheap crap that you won’t want to play. However, in the case of Gameloft’s new Spider-Man game on the iPhone and iPod Touch, it’s one of the best games on the platform!

Reminiscent of the excellent Neversoft Spider-Man games from the original PlayStation, this Ultimate Spidey game is a 3D beat-em-up where Spidey goes through levels and fights off various types of henchmen before reaching the boss of that level. You’ll run into numerous foes from Spidey’s rogue’s gallery and each one has a unique fight that keeps things fresh.

Controls are always a problem with iPhone games, and there will always be those people who refuse to play a game without physical buttons. However, the controls here are perfect with absolutely precise detections of your “button” presses and the virtual stick works flawlessly.

It’s a really impressive feat for an iPhone game; especially one with fast paced action. On screen you have a health meter, directional stick, and three main buttons: web, attack, and jump. Tapping attack multiple times quickly can chain together combos, and double tapping jump will allow you to swing. Occasionally there will be context-sensitive buttons that’ll appear near the joystick such as Spider-sense and a camera to take a photo of a boss. Finally under the life bar is a super meter that will unleash a more powerful combo when its filled.

Running on an iPhone 4 the game is lightning fast with high-resolution graphics tailored for the retina display. It should run fine on a 3GS, however I’m not quite sure how it’ll do on an older 3G especially if you have upgraded to iOS 4. Surprisingly it’s also filled with voice acting, which takes it one step closer to a console game.

If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch and have been wanting a really fun action game you can just pick up and play in short bursts, that just so happens to be a great Spider-Man game, you cannot go wrong with this one. Right now it’s going for $7 on the App Store and it’s worth every penny.
