We’ve all been there before. When a gadget flashes on the screen, we think to ourselves, “I want one of those!” Sadly, science fiction is one step behind fantasy and often times in the realm of the impossible. That still hasn’t stopped us from dreaming, and we’ve compiled our list of awesome gadgets from science fiction movies, excluding vehicles and weapons with the exception of the light saber. We know that we’ve missed a couple, so pitch us some of your favorites in the comments section.
Cloaking Device, Predator (1987)
Allegedly, a military commander invested research into the idea after watching the Predator (1987). According to high tech news, they’re getting closer and closer to that discovery with each decade. In the mean time, we’ll scheme some of the things we could do with it.
Light Saber, A New Hope (1977)
You should have seen this one coming. No science fiction list of weapons or technology is complete without it. While we originally wanted to exclude weaponry from our list, we just couldn’t resist this one. After all, there are plenty of nonviolent things you could do with it like cut a toast and brandish it like a nerdy bad ass.
Power Morpher, Power Rangers: The Movie (1995)
Maybe it’s because we haven’t matured past the age of 8, but we still have a special affection for the power morpher. It’s a small wonder that super heroes haven’t thought of employing such a device since it would enable changing into costume all the more faster.
Tricorder, Star Trek
Basically, it’s a multi use scanner for just about everything.
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005)
An intergalactic portable wikipedia PDA which can out inform any iphone.
Still Suit, Dune (1984)
Maybe it’s because we feel like buying such a prolific resource like water from stores is so unnecessary that the prospect of owning a suit which reprocesses one’s moisture is so enticing. Even if it does come at the expense of looking like a dork, it makes it all the more easier to pick out the eco-friendly hippies who would use this device as a permanent life style choice.
Holtzman Shield, Dune (1984)
It’s not necessarily a weapon, but a defense device which deflects any rapidly moving objects. Guns and rapidly moving blades are useless against it, making a stroll through South Central Los Angeles not so frightening.
Neutralizer, Men in Black (1997)
We have plenty of memories we wish that we didn’t remember. With MIB’s neutralizer, it would make that task all the more easier like forgetting our last girlfriend and The Last Air Bender (2010) movie.
Breast Enhancement Necklaces, Dude, Where’s My Car? (2000)
Possibly the only memorable thing from this wishfully forgettable film were the pendants adorned by their girlfriends which instantly enhanced their breasts. We know it would make a great birthday present for our ladies in waiting.
Liquid Breathing Apparatus, The Abyss (1989)
You know you’ve wanted to do it. Things like breathing are such a hindrance while swimming or surfing. James Cameron’s borrowed invention makes dispelled of such a necessity with this device.
