Breaking News for the Supergirl/Flash musical crossover

The much anticipated Spring DC crossover officially gets a date! That’s right, the CW has released that the Supergirl and Flash musical crossover will air March 21st on the CW. Unfortunately, the majority of the crossover will once again mainly take place on the Flash. The musical will begin at the end of the Supergirl episode March 20th, just like during the Invasion 4-night crossover. This asks the question: why can’t Supergirl get a full episode of the crossover herself? Is it truly a crossover if the cast of the Flash is only in her world (or episode) for 5 minutes? We already have characters jump shows, such as Diggle coming onto the Flash with Lyla or Malcolm Merlyn appearing on Legends of Tomorrow, and they don’t consider those episodes as crossovers. I just don’t think it’s fair for the cast of Supergirl. They deserve to be given a chance to hold the first part of a continuing story for the entire 45 minutes.

Despite Supergirl not getting a fair amount of the crossover, the cast list was released for the Flash’s episode, entitled “Duet,” and I was very happy to see cast members from Supergirl on that list. They include musical performances from: Grant Gustin, Melissa Benoist, Jesse L. Martin, Victor Garber (who is currently on Legends of Tomorrow), Carlos Valdes, Jeremy Jordan, John Barrowman (also on Legends). There are also non-singing guest star appearances by David Harewood and Chris Wood. The three actors (Jordan, Harewood, Wood) from Supergirl (besides Benoist) offer promise that Kara brings people from her Earth to the Flash’s Earth. I just hope my long-awaited interaction between Cisco and Winn occurs. We were gypped in the Invasion crossover and I think these two would get along so well because they are basically the same person. Ugh, we will just have to wait and see. There should be some great performances though. Several of these actors have theatre training and have starred on Broadway.

The villain of the musical episode was released months ago as the Music Meister, who can control people through songs. The most famous incarnation was Neil Patrick Harris on Batman: The Brave and the Bold. It has just been released that Darren Criss will be playing him in the crossover. He will be the third Glee alum in the episode.
I can’t wait till March to see this crossover. It takes a while to create and produce a good musical episode, especially when they have original songs. I hope “Duet” follows some of my favorites:

1. Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Once More With Feeling
Similar to the Music Meister, a demon is summoned to Sunnydale and can kill people through song and dance.

2. Scrubs: My Musical
A patient with a brain tumor hears everyone talking through song while at the hospital.

3. Psych: Psych-The Musical
This 2-hour musical episode deals with a murder case in the theatre and has 16 musical numbers.

4. That 70s Show: That 70s Musical
In their 100th episode Fez’s imagination shows the cast in song and dance.

5. Even Stevens: Influenza the Musical
While Ren has the flu, she sneaks to school to keep her perfect attendance record and is surprised to see everyone, from the students to the teachers, dancing and singing.
