The title for Star Trek 3 may have been revealed, and it’s just as strange as Into Darkness.
TrekMovie has learned that Paramount has registered the title “Star Trek Beyond” with the MPAA:
TrekMovie.com has it on good authority that Star Trek Beyond is being used for the title of the new Trek film. What we do know is that the name has been registered with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), a step that typically signifies a title has been settled on for an upcoming movie. It is possible, given Bad Robot’s history of secrecy and pretense, that this is merely a decoy name registered to stir up conjecture amongst the media and fans. But, the official title will need to be registered with the MPAA before the film’s release, and given the timeline, it seems likely that such a decision would be made now.
The site has a stellar track record with breaking news from the movies. For example they knew Khan was the villain in Into Darkness from the beginning of filming, even when JJ Abrams had the cast and crew lying about it until the movie’s premiere. Based on that, it’s a pretty good chance this is the title for the new Star Trek movie.
Honestly it’s a bit disappointing. 2016 will be the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek, and the movie released then deserves a better-sounding title than just “Beyond”. For the 25th Anniversary we got Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and it went on to be one of the best of the original cast movies. Hopefully Simon Pegg knows what he’s doing with the script…
