Rumor: Tom Welling to Appear as Superman in The Flash Season 2? (Probably Not…)

Smallville SuitThere’s a crazy rumor about the second season of The Flash being spread around social media, and while it’s likely completely false it deserves to be posted if only to show why it’s made up out of thin air.

I’ll explain why this could be BS after you read the rumor itself…

According to a site called Serpentor’s Lair citing (I couldn’t find the story anywhere there) Tom Welling would appear in The Flash season 2 as Superman:

Now normally we don’t report on rumors, but this one seems to be based on a semi-confirmation. According to Comic Central City Greg Berlanti talked at a CW Event stating that Superman may appear in Season 2 of The Flash and he will be played by Tom Welling, who is known for playing Clark Kent/The Blur on The WB/CW’s Smallville for 10 Seasons.

Apparently the events of the Season Finale will cause Barry to end up in an alternate universe (the Smallville Universe), not only that but Cisco and Caitlin will develop meta-human abilities

Now the idea of Tom Welling appearing as Superman makes sense in the context of the story, when Barry changes his mother’s fate he returns to another version of the universe, Smallville introduced us to the multi-universe concept and with Infinite Crisis being a developing story on The Flash it’s not too far off.

Forgive me if I don’t believe this. Firstly, DC’s Geoff Johns has said that both Batman AND Superman are off-limits for the Arrowverse shows. Now, Supergirl may have changed this a bit but if they’re casting Superman in that show…why wouldn’t they use the same guy in The Flash? Secondly, Welling refused to wear the Superman suit in the Smallville series finale. Watch that episode again and you’ll see how they had to cleverly edit around him to make it look like he was wearing the suit. If he wouldn’t suit up in his own show, why would he in The Flash?

The evidence of Superman being cast in Supergirl (which is produced by the same people) along with the history of Welling and the suit means this is likely completely false.
