Is Criterion Restoring Godzilla?

Criterion, a DVD and Blu-Ray production house known to present films in the best possible way, may be restoring the original Japanese Gojira (Godzilla). Recently, the company teased their fans on their Facebook page with the above image, which is a Toho film canister of the original 1954 Godzilla. Since then things have become very interesting.

According to monster movie expert August Ragone, Criterion has also found a fine-grain print of the 1956 American version of Godzilla; Godzilla: King of the Monsters:

So, Criterion put the call out to film collectors, everywhere, to help locate 35mm elements for GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS! Startlingly, within 24 hours, through the auspices of several fans — working together and respecting the anonymity of the source — according to “insiders”, a veritable Rosetta Stone, something far better than a 35mm print has been located: A 35mm Fine-Grain Print!

With that print in hand, Criterion can create the absolute best looking Blu-Ray release of Godzilla ever.

The release hasn’t been announced yet, but keep your fingers crossed if you want to see Godzilla smashing Tokyo in the best high-def quality possible.
